Acronyms and useful random facts (Military)

I will add to this list as I think of things.

For more acronyms, see here .

CF - The Canadian Forces, combined or "Unified Forces", being comprised of Air, Land, and Sea "elements", and special units.  Their recruiting site can be found here, however take everything with a large grain of salt.  Like that statement that a member can expect to be out of country for 6 months every 3 years.  Expect that is you want; you will be sorely disappointed.  I don't think the WOlf has been in country for a total of 6 months in the last 3 years!

DART - Disaster Assisstance Response Team - A team of mostly medical personel and engineers who can rapidly deploy to areas of the world that have been affected by disasters such as Earthquakes, flooding, Hurricaines, and the like.

DND - The Canadian Department of National Defence - the Powers that Be in the Canadian Military World

FSG - Family Support Group. I think this is similar to the American FRG, but I am not positive. The local family support group organizes coffee houses and monthly breakfasts for families of deployed, deploying or recently returned members to get together and lend comfort and understanding to each other, and form friendships and support networks. The FSG also offers seminars, workshops and courses, and fun days, some related to "the life" and some just general interest.

Hooker - someone who works on or with CH-47 "Chinook" helicopters

HTLA - Home Travel Leave Allowance, R&R in "American".  Canadian soldiers are typically allowed one HTLA for a 9 month deployment, and 2 for a deployment longer than 9 months.  They used to be 21 days including travel time, but seem to be down to 14 days.  The deployed member does not have to come "home", they can go to a third location if they wish to.

MFRC - Military Family Resource Centres. Like anything, some are more useful than others. Intended to provide relief and assisstance to military families by providing things like counseling, access to emergency and respite care of minor children, programs activites and information, etc.

Operation Soldier On - a program for wounded soldiers

1PPCLI - 1st Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. This was the Wolf's old regiment, who he served with for the majority of his tours to "nasty" places, including the ones that led to the majority of his PTSD issues. They sometimes refer to themselves as "Patricias". RCR soldiers, with whom they have a friendly rivalry, refer to them as "Princesses"

PT - Physical Training

PTB - Powers That Be - exact defitition varies with context

RCR - Royal Canadian Regiment.  Also, by other infantry regiments, "Run, Chickens, Run".  Referred to by Patricias as "Chicken Fuckers".  Hey, I don't make this stuff up, I just pass it along.

WAG - Wives and Girlfriends.  Not necissarily derogatory, depends on context.

WOG - With Out Guts

  1. Great info and definitions. Mostly the same here, just different terminology.

  2. When S. was home we found a truly phenomenal tattoo artist who is a retired (due to injury) RCR soldier. They had a good chuckle about which regiment was better, RCR or the Pat's.
