I came across this cartoon a couple of days ago, and I liked it, so I downloaded it and e-mailed it to a couple of my wildlands fire buddies, with a short note letting them know I was thinking about them, and wishing them well.
I got quite a touching little response this morning, letting me know that they are fine, and also telling me how much they appreciate things like this, and asking for more.
These guys have been on the go for a couple of months straight at this point, with no end in sight. They are among the teams that fly around North America helping with the big fire flaps. Sleeping in bunkhouses or tents, eating in mess tents, every waking hour on alert, sleeping when you can, never knowing what the day is going to bring, and doing you damnedest to make sure everyone, peer and public alike, stay safe. Limited contact with family and friends. Many of you who read here know, either first hand or vicariously, what that's like.
So my friends I ask you that if you have any graphics or cartoons similar to the one above, you keep my friends in mind, and send them to me at wolfandcrowblog {at} yahoo {dot} ca to send along to them. If you could say a little prayer or send a little positive energy too, that would be appreciated as well.
I love that... I remember Smokey the Bear from when I was a kid. I think my dad had a poster hanging somewhere. There's a small fire base nearby, and when the season was bad, truckloads of guys in their red shirts (forestry) would come into town covered in soot and whatnot from being out in the bush battling.
